Consider these three tips to maintain your reputation as a trusted resource.
1. Understand the time factor thoroughly. Don’t take on an assignment if you can’t work the project into your already busy schedule. Regardless of how small the assignment appears to be, it’s better to decline graciously than miss a deadline because of an overloaded schedule.
2. Before taking on something new, ask about flexibility. Does the potential deadline have a cushion, or is it hard? A client might be willing to budge on your delivery date. If you’re interested in mixing up your workload with a new project, but don’t want to risk letting down an existing client, it’s best to ask up front.
Doing so shows that you are interested and want to make the timing work. If you do get an extended deadline, you must stick to it.
3. Be honest early if you’re not able to meet your deadline. Timely candor shows your colleague, client or media contact that you respect their deadline. You are also giving that person the opportunity to find another resource, if necessary.
Missing a deadline can happen to the best of us, and it doesn’t necessarily brand you as unreliable. A lot depends upon how you handle the blown opportunity. The actions you take before and afterward often make the biggest difference in your ongoing relationship.
